Mindful ways to deal with Mental health issues

Mental health issues

These are more common than the attention to getting help is given @kylives A secondary result from a multi year recovery that I had from a parasite on my brain was a long running and at times a debilitating struggle with depression. A young friend of ours has a youtube channel dedicated to bring awareness to suffers of Mental health issues  and the roads to recovery. He and His lovely Lady Abby spent a weekend with us sharing our stories and with Sonya and I introducing them into simple wholesome tasty vegan fare. As well as a kite flying episode, and a parkrun we got to visit a waterfall and video an interview with me on the subject matter of clean eating, Mindfulness and being okay with what is.

5 Ways to Manage Mental health issues / Depression

Depression is a state of mind that everyone goes through at least once in a lifetime. Failures in life, the death of loved ones, serious illnesses or other personal problems cause depression in millions of people. ———————————————————————————————————— common depressions can be managed by doing some simple things on your own. Here are 5 most effective ways to manage depression in your life. ————————————————————————————————————— Exercise Exercising for 15-20 minutes or going for a brisk walk for about half an hour will do wonders in improving your mood making you feel better. ————————————————————————————————————- The reason behind this is the release of the hormone serotonin. Walking also helps in releasing oxytocin, and is known to free the mind of worries and anxieties. ————————————————————————————————————- Set small goals People who are depressed may feel that they cannot accomplish anything in life and are nothing more than failures. This negative self-image can be mitigated by setting small goals which can be achieved. ——————————————————————————————————————– With these small accomplishments, the depressing thoughts will slowly fade away. Setting goals like doing the laundry or cooking a meal are good enough to begin with. —————————————————————————————————————— As you start meeting these goals, confidence levels start building and you can find depression taking a back seat gradually. ——————————————————————————— Switch to a healthy diet there is ample evidence that eating healthy foods can lift one out of a state of depression. Foods containing folic acid (avocado and spinach) and omega-3 fatty acids are good anti-depressants and regular consumption of these can help to a great extent in fighting depression. ————————————————————————————————————- Combat the negative thoughts You need to confront the negative thoughts. Running away from them will pull you deep in the dungeons of depression. ———————————————————— Mindfulness You need to think what is causing the depression and what’s the best that you can do to get out of the slump you’re in. Many times, self-analysis and being the observer can eliminate negative thoughts which in turn will boost your low morale. ————————————————————————————————— Get help If you feel that doing any of the common things is not helping you come out of your depression, It is okay to speak up phone a help line or seek a psychotherapist for help. prescribed doses of antidepressant pills can help you come out of the depression. However, as these medications have certain side side effects one use them as short term treatment

Last Raw food Barefoot Athlete Podcast

Hey Crew, We decided that as educators of a lifestyle we have seen benefit many people and their lives….including ours, the title of the show did not accurately represent the total message that we want to share. We are building out a new site at www.thefreeradicals.com.au where we want to still spread the word of the advantages and benefits of a plant based lifestyle. We passionately believe and continue to follow and teach a plant based Raw Food diet, yet it was a roadblock to those who did not get the “Raw Food” aspect of a lifestyle for healthy aging and energetics. A prominent theme throughout the interactions we have with listeners of the podcast and participants of our events and market days was one of a specific intolerance to the food groups around dairy and wheat products. As it seems with all things there will be the prophets of doom, the naysayers and sceptics in regards to a shake up or examination of accepted nutritional values. Yet the results of the dietary and nutritional intake we insist in partaking of, in our western culture and the  consequences that are showing up as we age and even in our young children is alarming. It has always been our intention to stimulate thought and action in a person to examine their life and see if it fits with their idea of what health and vitality is. To many people have accepted ill health and disease, lack of vitality as a consequence of aging. The health  and vitality decline seen as a person ages has been attributed as a consequence of the effect of old age. There are many factors that play the hand of age related illness. The physical count of how many time we go around the sun on this bit of rock called the earth, is not the only correlation to age related infirmity. So we still call on you the reader and listener to examine the “truths” and accepted ways of doing things but the need for us to bang the “Raw Food” drum is not as critical to what we perceive as our message to bring awareness to the more invasive and accepted products that have immediate and long term damage to both the environment and your health. We still continue to be barefoot runners and competitive age group athletes. Our content production for our new podcast and site will be  aimed more at education and alternatives for dairy and gluten  products in recipes and lifestyles. As well as our commitment to healthy active sport participation we hope to be positive signposts to others by leading a lifestyle full of energetic and mindful living. If you want to follow along head over to www.remergy.com.au where you can get a free download of 10 never fail easy recipes and ebook. The concepts of Mindfulness and and energetics are still as relevant to us, as is the issues of consuming as much unprocessed and environmentally sustainable foods, goods and services as we can in the hope of a being part of the rise in consciousness that needs to be taken by humanity for its next elevation to greater possibilities  of harmonious relationships between all facets of life here on this planet we call Earth.

  Topic of the week =============================

Justification and Complacency

I am not one to raise the vegan flag and swat somebody over the head if they choose to eat meat or find a sense of convenience in buying a Big Mac or having a fish and chip takeaway. Indeed the irony of a circumstance that is in my life is my youngest daughter “don’t call me a kid anymore” year 11 teenager has got a “do want fries with that” job at the local fast food outlet. If you have children you soon realize that all the dreams and aspirations you had for them can quickly take a beeline out the back door as the innate complexity of the individual spectrum of humanity that they are becomes manifest. So…. Do I have to find a place for justification that my daughter works in a place that I know has many attributes of what I see as a ailing society attached to it. Is it my place to say to her she cannot work there as it offends my sensibilities and certain parameters, no I do not think so and I do not have to justify why I think she can or cannot work there, though at the same time I do not give in to any complacency on the issues that arise. A point of contention that I labour with, is one of our ability to accept and justify our positions from our knowledge learned,  our thoughts ingrained in us by prior association, as well as other inputs that are given to us through the advertising elements that surround us. Without the application of mindfulness this combination can persuade us of the inability of  our lives to gather the courage to be able to step out of the norm, and deliver to ourselves a life that is unique and fulfilling. When you look at a change you want to make in your life, or the voice you want to be in the world When the chatter in the back of your head starts telling you to forget it, it can not be done. By default you make the voice of the easy, convenient, stand in line thinking, all the more powerful in a world that needs more people to start sticking their head out of the window and shouting I am mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. I am more than aware of the naysayers that continue to tell me how unattainable the save the whale and keep the rain forest ideas are. If you stand up and make a point that the production of meat is far more “expensive ” than sourcing plant based nutritional needs, the slaughter or manufacturing of the animal is only one aspect of the story.

If I am on the side of Plant based nutrition.

I can justify my stance against the degrees of suffering experienced by animals at the slaughter house or at commercial farming practices. In the same instance the protagonist across the table  seeking to justify the point of view for animal consumption, can do so based on criteria that is validated in their opinion. So it becomes an argument of opinions, though each party may seem to have great evidence for the affirmation and validation of their idea to be the most truthful. It is at this juncture that justification may give way to a complacency of acceptance.

When life is said and done, we all want to live on the side of going toward pleasure and away from pain.

So when there is more of the need to enter into an existence or circumstance that has an aggravation ( pain) attached to it, choices can be quickly made to become complacent about certain attributes; seeking to temper the quality of justification requiring a more rigorous and or more inconvenient solution. I personaly dont need to be right about something and prove my point. I do not want to enter a contest of who is right and who is wrong. You can find an opposing position to most points of view or point of contention. Getting caught up in the need for justification to be a right or wrong issue is fraught with many biased thinkings that complacency can creep into. Complacency could be seen as the surrendering of an ideal through lack of resistance for the sake of convenience at the same time as justifying your actions to alleviate any conscience qualms. The need to be mindful about what is the thought process you are making decisions based on, is more of the element I would encourage to be the justification/ complacency base of your actions, not if it is right or wrong issue.

Does Selling Need To Be Sexy

If we ask  do different genders react to sexualized advertising? The question should be why does the need to be sexy have anything to do with worth or value no matter what the age or gender. Promoting thigh gap as a marker of following a 100% raw food diet…. what a load of……….BS  Race reports and Training Run in with dog owners, Easing in to harder stuff.                 Does selling need to be sexy

This question may not seem to have a lot to do with Raw foods, Barefoot running or mindfulness but it does. When telling some body they need to change their lifestyle, by getting up early for exercise, stop eating comfort food, get more sleep, this discipline is not a sexy sell In a recent magazine advert I saw a the lingerie model with long, tousled blonde hair and lips painted come-hither red. Her gaze is seductive as she shows off her breasts, saucily shrouded in a see-through bra. This model is Jacky O’Shaughnessy, she is 62 years old — and the tagline for the underwear advertisement in question is:

                             ‘Sexy has no expiration date.’

For the company that hired her, American Apparel, the casting of Jacky for their Facebook promotion was a good call. Everywhere you look there are women making the effort to prove ‘sexy has no expiration date’. The question should be Why does the need to be sexy have anything to do with worth or value no matter what the age or gender This a disturbing trend I see in certain elements of health especially in the raw food movement raw food rotten worm with one particular element  promoting thigh gap as a positive marker of following a 100% raw food diet                                           …. what a load of….. BS There is a fine line between appreciating and objectifying men and women, should we use sex to sell  health and awareness. As with all things, there’s a time and a place for everything and it’s no different for using sex to sell. Granted that in any environment clamoring for market attention, a product or service could benefit from adding a sexy element to an advertisement, However, keeping the audience in mind is using sex to sell more about your audience than it is about the product or service. If we ask , do different genders react to sexualized advertising? then it brings into focus, when speaking about a healthy diet ; what is the dynamic that encourages people to listen to the message of whole foods and a healthy way of life. Is it the stud muffin shot of opportunists like the rawbrahs … yes that is a true internet name, it is a trio of  boys selling six pack abs on a pseudo “raw Food ”  slick marketing platform with the tag of “redefining all health systems” Or is it a scantily clad thigh gap, plastic enhanced girl like Freelee…again ..yes another internet name.. …  being held up as the positive interpretation of a raw food healthy life style. I actually have a lot of time for anybody who stands up for their beliefs such as Freelee  and are prepared to walk the walk and change the message when it becomes apparent change is needed to be addressed. What I don’t agree on is the sexualizing and debasing of a message of health and vitality. Please get a grip, we have a lizard or reptilian brain that responds to certain primal urges, food is one.                          Sex and reproduction is definitely another. This underlying, pre-programmed disposition to respond to sexual imagery is strong,  being  used for over 100 years in advertising. Sex, no doubt about it, is a strong selling tool but it’s the wrong kind of attention, and won’t lead to long term acceptance or realistic expectations, so generally truth and a realistic message ultimately lose out. SO I would be more inclined to say Does selling need to be sexy is not true. With all the aspects of a healthy life style in place, an increased sense of virility, sexuality and vibrancy can be a positive result at the end of the day. The non sexy message is that to get to this result and to experience the benefit of your healthy lifestyle it comes at the cost of discipline, sweat, and mindfulness of your actions not just from if the idea is seen as Sexy

Frugal Raw Mindfulness

Play
By being frugal and mindful are we contributing to the resistance against living a consumer marketing driven, cash cow life. I hope that is an obvious resounding yes. In this weeks podcast Races and training Sonya has started her lead in to the Mt Mee Marathon one of the toughest of road marathons in Queensland. I am still sitting on the sideline with a leg injury from last weeks park run. Unshoe get another thumbs down for our latest purchase from them. Ingredient of the week Chia seed Whats on and whats happening Heading down to Sydney.. 19th to 21 st Manley to be precise so if there is any listeners who want to catch up for a run, hit me up on twitter @ watzzupsport  or facebook page Topic of the week

5 tips on Frugal Raw Mindfulness

Know your budget

Being frugal means: Caring about your money, and trying not to waste it like paying your bills late when you’d get a discount for using direct debit buying in bulk foods when they’re on sale. Use your local library instead of buying every single book new. Cutting out things which are convenient but over priced IE. takeaways .

2. Understand Your Goals

It’s about valuing your money by translating it to life expenditure,  spend on the things which you really want. You wouldn’t say “no” to having more money in the bank, without having to work extra That’s what understanding frugality can bring you – even if you’re of a low income. frugal is not desperate or poor You earn hundreds of thousands, and still end up with financial problems if you’ve got no idea about how to control your spending and what controls your impulse to spend. “The way to wealth depends on just two words, industry and frugality.” (Benjamin Franklin) – 18th century Being frugal isn’t some 21st century idea. It’s been known in many forms as a way to live a happy, rich life. The conspiricist in me wants to shout out ” Beware..Beware ” about the consumer driven lifestyle that the modern western world wants you to believe is the accepted and best way to to lead a live full             of ” success and hapiness”

3  Expand your creativity.

Frugality Doesn’t Mean Being Cheap, not all of the motives that keep people from overspending are positive Cheapness is different from frugality, Cheapness is when you have enough money but you still Buy shoddy, low-quality goods – that can cost you more in the long run. Take time and refuse to spend money on things which you don’t really or think you “need” , take time to examine how else could you get it. Take time to examine other ways to get what you want without just handing over your cash.

4 Reassess Progress

I know people who just can’t bear to spend their money on, anything at all. That’s not what I am talking about. People who understand the idea of being frugal have a number of motives that help keep their spending under control. Some people are forced to live pretty spare lives for a number of reasons, let your reason to be mindful of your income in, income out, be based around getting the best purchasing power for things that are important to your health and well being. Being not tied to a consumer spending dictate, then you are not in any way being cheap, but you are allowing yourself  not  to get caught up in the accepted and consumer driven marketing messages that bombard us all. Which, is why I find it so baffling that some people take this route of, takeaways, having the latest electronic gadget, buying  glossy magazines, purchasing fashion statements,  yes, how you spend your money is up to you, but when those decisions are governed by marketing dictates I don’t think it’s much of a choice. After a short time you can quickly replace the sound of money fluttering away with the sound of ka.. ching money/ life energy saved.

5 Celebrate

For me the idea of going on ” holiday” does not have a great deal of appeal as a celebration, same as having an extravagant meal out once a month is not how I would celebrate. I would more, buy one great quality item instead of three cheap versions, preferring to relish in the idea that I do not have to “work” just to feel as if I am swimming against the tide. What ever it means to you to celebrate,  frugal living is about examining what you want out of your life, being mindful and resourceful enough to make it happen. A couple dollars saved here, and a few dollars invested there will not lead to a life of deprivation; it can be a start for a platform that you can view greater possibilities from. Tying the frugality message back in to the Raw food Barefoot podcast is the ethos of the REM life style design that encourages an uncomplicated simple raw food nutrition, understanding the energetics behind your actions and being mindful of the actions you take. We take our message every where we go because it is what we live, are we rich “no”…….. do we have unlimited resources “no”…… by  being aware of what we have do we live a happy life ” yes “. By being frugal and mindful are we contributing to the resistance against living a consumer marketing driven cash cow life I hope that is an obvious resounding ” YES “. Sonya’s Quote of the week “You may not see the fruit of today’s work but you have seeded a lifetime of knowledge”

Running with headphones good or bad

The common comment I hear is ” when I am in training for my Marathon I need something to help me through all those K’s ” Stop it then, don’t do it, I have no connection with you.  For me Marathon running is for people who have other goals and aspirations, other than achieving a level of the fitness that I aspire to. Is It Dangerous to Run With Headphones

is running with earphones dangerousis running with earphone dangerous

It’s a dangerous practice and doctors have definitely seen an increase in the number of runners who had accidents while wearing headphones, so the question is running with headphones good or bad Results There were 116 reports of death or injury of pedestrians wearing headphones. The majority of victims were male (68%) and under the age of 30 (67%). The majority of vehicles involved in the crashes were trains (55%), and 89% of cases occurred in urban counties. 74% of case reports stated that the victim was wearing headphones at the time of the crash. Many cases (29%) mentioned that a warning was sounded before the crash. Conclusions The use of headphones with handheld devices may pose a safety risk to pedestrians, especially in environments with moving vehicles.

Pros for having earphones on

Music can sometimes make running feel easier. Studies find that music reduces your perception of how hard you are running by about 10 percent. An external stimulus such as music can actually block some of the internal stimuli trying to reach the brain—such as fatigue-related messages from muscles and organs. When these messages are blocked, this reduces a runner’s perception of effort, so you feel like you can run farther, faster.

Cons for running with headphones

One big problem is that listening to music can remove you from the other sounds that running produces, such as breathing and foot strike, which are essential cues.

They give you feedback on your effort.

Running while listening to music also removes you from the environment you’re in, which can be unsafe. And in races, it makes you oblivious of other runners and you can’t hear the directions being given by officials. WHO NEEDS MUSIC Serious athletes tend to be associators, which means they focus intently on internal cues such as breathing, heart rate, and muscular tension. This type of athlete tends to not derive as much benefit from external stimuli such as music. Then there are “dissociators.” Your average active person falls into this category. For these people, music can be a motivational force. Dissociators will seek it to distract them from the boredom often associated with exercise.

So why do you run

For me I like to run and listen to my body and sometimes I go and just run, just like the saying “sometimes I sit and think sometimes I just sit” The ability to be at peace and be calm is something we’ve lost in our culture; we’ve lost it in favor of multitasking. I would agree that listening to music, podcasts or audiobooks during running is a form of multitasking. When In the “flow state,” which is complete immersion in the task at hand, time almost seems to stand still. You’re enjoying what you are doing, you feel at one with yourself. This is why I am a proponent of a barefoot raw food lifestyle stripped down simplicity The common comment I hear is ” when I am in training for my Marathon I need something to help me through all those K’s Marathon running is an event not a sport, same as Ironman triathlon. Marathon participation around the world is booming in recent years. Given the numbers supported by data, it’s obvious that running the vaunted Marathon distance is quickly becoming the de facto goal for many beginner runners. The intention to get of the couch and start a new life based on activity, healthy eating, and mindful decisions is something to be encouraged. Though, endurance events are not a long term viable choice in many aspects for the vast majority of punters. I am not going to make myself popular with the hard core marathhoners and Ironmen tattooed contingent, but they are just another money/ time sucking event. Being events that has very little to do with health and fitness, and more to what it has to do with obsessive indulgence and buying the latest and greatest toy that the consumer marketplace has on offer. I am not saying that you should not set a goal to compete in a ironman event or run a marathon, climb Mt everest, or firewalk Just understand your reasons why you want to be involved, for health and fitness or purge yourself of demons and dragons that there are better ways to slay.

Mindfulness is about exploring reality and how to relate to it in a harmonious manner ie minimizing suffering and maximizing deep long-term Equanimity It is a deep and subtle concept frequently misunderstood and easily confused with suppression of feeling, apathy or inexpressiveness.   Equanimity comes from the Latin word aequus meaning balanced, and animus meaning spirit or internal state.

How to Develop Equanimity

Developing equanimity involves the following aspects: Intentionally creating equanimity in your body attempting to maintain a continuous relaxed state over your whole body as sensations (pleasant, unpleasant, strong, subtle, physical, emotional) wash through. Creating equanimity in your mind in each moment to be present inviting ourselves to interface with this moment in full awareness with the intention to embody as best we can an orientation of calmness mindfulness and equanimity right here and right now.… This means attempting to let go of negative judgments about what you are experiencing and replacing them with an attitude of loving acceptance and gentle matter-of-factness By noticing when you drop into states of equanimity and by exploring the state, you are training your subconscious to produce the state more frequently when feelings are experienced with equanimity, they assure their proper function as Correct motivators and directors of behavior as opposed to distorting behavior. Ya gotta get Ya meat you vegan “expletive”

This is a tamed down comment that has been left on my youtube channel. Unpleasant for sure but the greater unpleasantness is the sad ignorance and blatant lies that evolve around the myth of “needing” meat to survive as a species. In this dialogue is the ” Vegan ” label and all that it suggests in people’s minds. When does being a “vegan” start to mean activism and unbending attitudes. Introduction       Race reviews and results Not much to report as we have had a weeks break doing other things Ingredient of the week Maple syrup Whats On / whats happening The 1st Raw Food Barefoot Adventure Feb 8th and 9th 2013 Link to The Weekends Itinerary  REM Lifestyle Design REM Lifestyle design   Topic of the week ” Ya gotta get Ya meat you vegan F##ktard “ I have observed and experienced the single mindedness of an observance to an Ideal, being as destructive as the original thought meme it was opposing. As a loose observation of something I saw on the raw food thought leaders blog of Frederic Patenaude was the reference to when does observance to an idealism become a cult mentality. He proposed that it’s a cult when Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished. That is something you find online if you are not part of the party politics of a forum or group you get deleted. I understand that there are plenty of trolls on the internet that are just haters and dissenters. It is good house keeping practice to nuke them, such as the hater that left the comment on my youtube channel.   Though I left the comment there,  as I am not “trying ” to change anyones mind or operate  with the its my way or the highway type of attitude. Whenever you hear a raw food expert talk, you can get the feeling that it’s “Their way or the highway.” Everyone else is stupid, but they have the absolute truth. If you don’t get the results, it’s because you didn’t follow their advice properly. There is no room for compromise or questioning, and anyone who does is kicked out of the group. As for the questions that arise from the lack of understanding to the nature of nutrition and it sources. The Internet is a wonderful tool  in this day and age you can glean all sides to a story from the data banks and vast repositories of information that is available to us all.

The REM lifestyle design

As The REM Lifestyle suggests, there is more to a balanced life than just the diet and nutrition that goes into our body This is the area of discernment that I would like my message to resonate with those who I get to influence in any form or manner. You will not convince a person of something with only skilfull words,  you can only point in the direction of your truth with your words. You then show commitment and integrity by being a truthful representation of your ideal through your actions. You may become the lesson that person needed to see.

” Not enough protein in the vegan diet”

As for our angry friend and his assertion that we need meat,  one of the important areas that I do address for those encouraged to lead a plant fueled lifestyle is understanding the role of Vitamin B12. You often hear that you can only get B12 From animals , if this were the case why is it that B12 deficiencies show up in non vegetarian/ vegan diets. It is a shortage that is found in meat eaters as well. B12 is an important vitamin. BUT you don’t need to eat animals or their byproducts to get it. It can be found in certain cereals, soy milk , tempeh, seaweed, and some yeasts. Bacteria is actually responsible for making B12 and is found in things like dirt. Where do you think the animals get it from? It’s from what THEY eat. And yes, if you are still concerned about getting your B12 then take the vitamin supplements. I have used a Vitamin B 12 injection and I commit to to take a sublingual  B12 over a 1 month period per year. Last year I did not. Results from my last blood tests show me as very good across the whole spectrum. Another of the most oft asked questions is where do I get my protein. The healthiest diet is the whole foods plant-based. The major concern of carnivores is “not enough protein in the vegan diet”. Major health problems in a western culture IS due to overconsumption of meat! Every plant has protein in it, especially beans, nuts, grains, Spirulina(sea vegetables). If you need to substitute your burger Pattie and snags for the soy derivatives,  you may have heard  that this is unsafe especially because they say it can affect hormones and my health drastically. MDs check in with different soy recommendations (eg. Dr. Mercola vs. Dr. Oz) and some say soy should only be eaten if it is a fermented version. Many people who are allergic to soy are actually allergic to the PROCESS of soy. Soy sauce and tempeh are NOT processed the way tofu and soy burgers are.  There are many people who are allergic to soy but can handle tempeh. I am a fully plant-based lifestyle eater and I use tempeh and tofu on occasion as a store-bought Item. We will use coconut, almond, or rice milk and make lots of recipes with nuts like cashews and almonds for my protein, again in the understanding that nuts are a high fat source. chocolate mousse     Your protein requirements can be found across eating a range of foods. As you apply your change from where YOU are, you not try to fit somebody elses ideal of what you want to represent I read a great quote from the Actor Woody Harrelson that summed up a few things for me on the justification people allow themselves for their choices to stray from a plant-based diet “If you eat chicken, maybe you’re on one level. If you wear a mink coat, maybe you’re on another level. But if you wear cosmetics, cosmetics that are tested on animals, then you’re just unconscious. Really, my message is simple. It’s a message of compassion. In this world that is spinning madly out of control, we have to realize that we’re all related. We have to try to live harmoniously.” I will leave you with those words, “It’s a message of compassion we have to try to live harmoniously ” If you want a Question answered leave it in the comments or start up a conversation on the facebook page or on the the Mindfulness and the Zest for life Google + community page.

Mindfulness, Meditation, and Behavior

A number of studies have demonstrated that systematic mindfulness training, as well as brief meditation practices in novices, can influence areas of the brain involved in regulating attention, awareness, and emotion Another key element of mindfulness is the cultivation of equanimity, or non-reactivity. Specifically, mindfulness meditation teaches one to pay attention to and acknowledge both one’s inner experience and the outer world, without necessarily reacting. The ability to simply observe and accurately sense thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations – without having to change them, or act on them – can be instrumental in breaking habitual behavior patterns that can harm one’s health, such as smoking a cigarette when feeling stressed, eating comfort food when feeling sad or “empty”, or turning to alcohol or other substances to “numb out” when feeling overwhelmed. One key element of mindfulness is the ability to pay attention to the present moment, on purpose (Kabat-Zinn, 2003). Clinical studies have found 8 weeks of mindfulness meditation training (MBSR) gave an increased ability to orient one’s attention to the present moment. Other clinical studies found that 8 weeks of mindfulness meditation training significantly reduced ruminative thinking in persons with a history of depression (Ramel et al., 2004). Together, these studies indicate that mindfulness appears to involve reshaping ways of thinking that engender improved emotional well-being. Mindfulness scale development research has found that people with higher natural levels of mindfulness – irrespective of formal meditation training – report feeling less stressed, anxious and depressed, and more joyful, inspired, grateful, hopeful, content, vital, and satisfied with life Research further suggests that people with higher levels of mindfulness are better able to regulate their sense of well-being by virtue of greater emotional awareness, understanding, acceptance, and the ability to correct or repair unpleasant mood states Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), or MiCBT Overall, it appears that focused, concentrative meditation practices can increase one’s ability to maintain steady attention on a chosen object, like the breath or another person, whereas open awareness meditation practices can increase one’s ability to flexibly monitor and redirect attention when it becomes distracted (Lutz et al., 2008a). Based on these findings, not only is it possible to train the mind to change the brain, but, in fact, one’s ability to do so may get stronger as one gains meditation experience. New Year resolutions, who’s driving the bus

Hey Crew sorry to keep you waiting on the next episode, problems I have been having with the site, really hit the fan last week  causing all sorts of problems and another learning curve for me. I had to deal with the technical side of getting a website and podcast to play nicely, after a piece of malicious code got its way into the internals and corrupted everything……sigh… what a way to launch into a New Year. Though it does tie in with the idea of the topic  New Year resolutions, who’s driving the bus. When setting our athletic goals for the year or just setting an expectation to have a lifestyle change this year, it pays to bring to mind what are the drivers behind our motivations and desires. This episode I encourage a mindfulness about what is your measuring stick and motivator, is it coming from a good place. Irrespective of the result that you are looking for, may have noble result behind it; what is the internal source of motivation you will be calling on to actualize the goal . Is the goal set only with the sense of accomplishment at the outcome, or is the resolution to enjoy the journey as well. What  are the drivers behind your expectations and planning, where is your real happiness on your journey and your arrival. We have a minimalist shoe review of  the Unshoe A round up of the training and race reviews.
